How to Travel on a Budget

My husband and I hop on a plane and head to a beach at least twice a year. We have also been known to do a long weekend in Las Vegas every couple years! We are, by no means, "rollin in the dough" though. We are smart about our travels, allowing us to make multiple trips each year. Traveling is a huge priority for us so we make it happen! Here's a few tips on how we do it!

No Holidays. I don't think we've ever really traveled on an actual Holiday. We take a "Christmas Trip" every year for about a week at the beginning of December. We love having the resorts to ourselves before the chaos of Christmas Break begins. Most of our vacations are to adult-only resorts but a lot of the time we'll take a chance on a family resort for our Christmas Trip. Since most kids are in school on the dates we go we've been pretty lucky so far!

Unfortunately my birthday falls on a sorta-holiday, Spring Break. We definitely do not travel on Spring Break! We're hoping to do a birthday trip for my 40th next year but we'll be celebrating a couple weeks early! We have found that the last weekend of February is a GREAT time to travel!

In the summer we like to go early to mid May, before the kiddos get out of school. The end of summer (August/September) can be a bit trickier, with it being hurricane season, but that's why we buy the travel insurance! You'll also find some awesome deals for October travel!

Airline Mileage Credit Card. Especially important these days, with airfare being sooo expensive! We are United snobs and try to fly United any chance we get! My husband and I both have credit cards that give us United Airline Miles. I put EVERYTHING I can on my credit card (and then pay it off) each month! The airfare for at least one of our vacations each year is purchased with miles. Most years, depending on destination, we can do two vacations with miles. As I write this, I'm reminded that I need to look into another credit card where I can earn miles for other airlines, since United doesn't fly to all of our wish-list destinations.

Research Destinations. Actually, let me research destinations for you! Obviously, some destinations are more expensive than others. We usually try to pick one trip to one of the more exotic/expensive destinations each year and 1-2 trips to much more affordable destinations. But even when we pick a more expensive destination, we don't go crazy spending money! Mexico, both Cancun and Cabo, can be done on the cheaper side. Costa Rica is our absolute favorite place when we're looking for a more affordable destination. Cruises can also be a super inexpensive option (especially if you live near one of the ports).
